The Chessie System logo on the front of the locomotive was derived from the Chesapeake and Ohio advertising-theme mascot “Chessie”, which was used to emphasize the comfort of sleeping on C&O passenger trains, as seen in the bottom two images, one from the 1930s and one from the 1940s (in which Chessie was enlisted into wartime service).
